In 1959 the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety was created to test all vehicles that were to be sold in the United States for their safety in crashes. Since then, with the help of IIHS testing, safety features in cars have advanced dramatically. To highlight these accomplishments, the IIHS tested a collision between a 1959 Chevy Bel Air and a 2009 Chevy Malibu.
You would think that the much heavier Bel Air, with its solid steel body, would probably take less of the brunt of impact over the lighter and thinner Malibu, but as the video blow shows, that is not the case. With airbags, seat belts, crumple zones, and safer design, the driver of the Malibu would come out relatively unscathed.
Thank you to the IIHS for helping to make the roads and cars that drive on them much safer. If you want to know about the new safety features that are put in car, and how they can save you in an accident, contact me and I’d love to show you how far we’ve come.
We all like driving with some tunes added as a soundtrack, but when is loud too loud? One of the most popular things to upgrade in cars is the stereo system, and we all would like to hear crisp and clear sound coming from our speakers. There are some people however, that seem to take things a little overboard.
If your car looks and sounds like the one in the video below, you may want to rethink your system. It’s bad for the car, your ears, and in many places, its against the law. Sound laws exist for two reasons, to keep annoyances down in the public, and to be able to hear emergency vehicles. So watch this video and remember, rocking out every once and again is fine, but don’t take it too far.
We all hate being blocked in to a parking space by another car because it means that scratches and dents are sure to follow. But what if there was a way to get in and out or your car without having to have any clearance on either side of you car? That’s what the company JATECH wanted to answer, and they came up with the disappearing car door. Be sure to check out the video below and let me know what you think about this prototype door system in the comments!
Have you ever been put under anesthesia? Did you do anything funny? Did you get it on tape? Well, the guy in the video below has a very vivid imagination. Under anesthesia he thought he was racing his car. It’s one hysterical video. That’s why it’s the video of the week. Thanks to Autoblog for sharing.
Anesthetics are a wonderful thing. Aside from protecting our fragile psyches from the horrors of witnessing a trained professional go all choppin’-broccoli on our insides, they also allow for a certain level of hilarity that’s difficult to emulate without the assistance of modern chemistry. Need proof? Look no further than the video after the jump. In it, reader Matt is knocked out cold in preparation for the removal of his wisdom teeth. With his body trapped in an oral surgeon’s chair, Matt’s mind apparently retreated to the safety of somewhere a little more comforting – somewhere like the driver’s seat of his favorite sports car.
While Matt says he has no recollection of the entire surgery, office staff and family members say that he was slamming gears the entire time he was out. We do have to commend him on a well-executed heel-toe downshift, but it looks like that missed shift from third to fourth likely cost him the championship. There’s always next year, man.
Challenging the impossible is something only humans can do. Join the inquisitive minds at Honda and journey into the unknown with climbers, divers, scientists, astronauts, engineers and other modern-day explorers with this amazing short film. What many people don’t realize is that Honda is more than just an automobile company. They are interested in more than just rubber, metal and wire…they are committed to mobility for all of human kind. It is a noble venture and and vision that Honda has…and after watching the video below, I think you’ll agree with me.
I think that it goes without saying that, in terms of technological advancements, Honda is at the top. Further, in terms of humanistic advancements, Honda is leading our way into the future.
We hope you enjoyed the video and if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them here or come and see us. We have been inspired by Honda. Have you?
This had me rolling out of my office chair in hysterics. People thought I was crying cause I was upset. Really though I was crying because I was laughing so hard.
Come on people…. Getting your car washed is not Quantum Physics. You pull into the bay, turn your car off, let the cycle begin and for goodness sake you ignore that stupid harmless flyer that was left on your windshield. You could seriously hurt yourself or worse!!! You could hurt your car!!
Holy Moly Mackrell!! I’m sure most of you have seen this on the news already but I work a lot so I’m the last one to see anything! If you haven’t seen this yet then you are in for a treat. It once again proves why driving the speed limit and wearing a seat belt are so important. Thanks to Automotive Addict for sharing this with me. Don’t be driving you’re new Kia like this ok?!?
Captured on a state trooper’s dashboard camera was a high-speed crash in Dayton, Ohio in a 1987 Pontiac Firebird. Reportedly witnesses saw the Firebird flying pass them on Interstate I-675 at 100mph previously before the crash. The cruiser’s camera was able to capture the Firebird literally flying into the air after hitting a guard rail then shattering into as many as 4 major pieces ejecting the driver. Unbelievably the driver survived the crash and was listed in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital’s ICU. Talking about real dukes of hazard type stuff here!
Can you believe that? At least the driver is ok but that was totally insane!
Um…. I don’t even know what to say. I am astounded that some high school kids could put together an electric car. Kids are just so much smarter and learn so much more than we did back in my day. This is simply amazing. I found this story and video on Edmunds and I just had to share with you guys cause it is amazing. Talk about 1st place at the science fair!!
When we were in high school we built a birdhouse. It didn’t last the winter and almost certainly took the lives of a young family of Cardinals. The kids from DeLaSalle charter high school? Yeah, they took a 2000 Lola Indy chassis, put a lightweight plastic skin on it that would make the Mazda Furai blush and then made it electric. Oh, and then took it around Bridgestone’s proving grounds — using Bridgestone Ecopia EP100 low-rolling resistance tires– where they managed to get the equivalent of 300mpg. The Guinness Book of World Records is currently reviewing the claim.
Still think your game-winning touchdown junior year was cool? Right?
What do you guys think? Could you have made this when you were in high school? I’d like to see you try!!
This just might be one of the craziest things I have ever seen. Yes, just in case you were wondering that is a jet powered school bus. Talk about getting to class on time. No worries when your in this bus. Thanks to Automotive Addicts for sharing this video which just possible made my day and the day of some of my readers! Unfortunately I don’t think I give you jet power in your Acura, Honda, Hyundai and Kia but I could sure try!! ha.
In the world of WHY NOT, anything is possible. Paul Stender along side of the guys at Indy Boys, Inc. came up with a ridiculous idea of building a customized school bus with a 42,000-horsepower GE J-79 Phantom jet fighter engine to propel this monstrosity to over 300 mph.
One of the videos below shows the astonishing 80-foot flames coming out of the jet engine as the bus is sentracing down a runway. The school bus’ build incorporated metal structure parts normally found on a 747 jet. I am sure over 300-mph you want some type of stability.
I bet you are wondering what the purpose of all of this is. According to Cnet Stender says, “I built the bus for two reasons. The first is to entertain people because, come on, it’s a jet bus. The second, is to keep kids off drugs. Jets are hot, drugs are not.”
new car, used car, batteriesThis has to be one of the most clever commercials I have ever seen. I just had to share it with you cause it made me laugh. Gary Numan is the New Wave musician behind the huge hit, “Cars” (1979). Now he plays an instrumental version of his song on 24 car horns. Make sure you check out the video for the making of the commercial. It’s pretty interesting too!
