Does your car sputter and backfire? It may be a water problem

If you have ever driven down a road, press the gas pedal, and hear a bang and a shudder, then you know that it is a bit unnerving.  The first time it happens, you may think that your engine is about to shoot apart.  The good news is, it’s just your engine backfiring and there is an easy way to fix the problem.

While there are a few things can cause backfires, the main cause is water that gets into your fuel system.  But you keep your fuel cap on tight and only put gasoline in the tank? Well that won’t keep water out all the time.  When you are driving with a gas tank that is about half full, changing temperatures and humidity may cause some condensation in your gas tank.  The water will sink to the bottom of the tank, and when you push down the gas pedal, the water can find its way into your fuel line.  From here, your fuel filter will usually filter out the water, but if you have an old fuel filter, water will go into the engine and cause the sputtering and backfires.

The best way to avoid this is to change out your fuel filter every 6 months or so.  If you do this and it still sputters, or if it sputters after you fill up your gas tank then you may need to go to a mechanic to either clean out your fuel tank, or check for any wiring problems that may be causing backfires.  If you are experiencing any problems with bangs and pops coming from your car, please get it checked out as soon as possible.  The longer you wait, the more damage may occur.

If you have any questions about how to change your fuel filter, or if your engine is making any unwanted and strange noises, don’t hesitate to let me know, and I’ll be sure to help you out.
